Simon Cowell and ITV bosses are hoping to spice up the X Factor by making Mel B a new judge.
The Spice Girl is in protracted talks with chiefs to replace Tulisa on the 10th series but the only stumbling block is her busy schedule.
Mel recently moved back to Los Angeles as the new judge on another of Simon’s shows, America’s Got Talent, and filming clashes with the X Factor’s opening auditions.
The singer, 37, is being lined up after impressing as a guest judge last year.
A source said: “Mel did fantastically and proved a big draw on the ratings front.
"She is just what the show needs to liven it up fresh, bolshy and opinionated and Simon is a big fan.
“Mel is also Northern which, although it sounds ridiculous, has proved important with audiences up north.
"An initial deal has been agreed it’s now a case of trying to make Mel’s AGT schedule fit around the X Factor.”
